Fayola's House Cleaning Tips Issue #013 --,, Garage Cleaning Tips
October 10, 2006
Hi,
 I remember the day I walked into my brother's garage - I
backed out with cobwebs on my face. However - during my
quick visit I realized why the cars were parked outside.

His garage looked like a graveyard. Stuff ended up there
because the house had no more room.

For my brother cleaning and organizing his garage may take
a few days. Hopefully your garage does not look like his
.

If it does - or comes close its time to get to work. Your
car should have its home back.

First - in a situation like this, it's best to start with a
clean slate. Take everything out of your garage. Carry some
dust with you if you can.

Once its empty, clean it. Get rid of the cobwebs, the dust,
the stuff you can't identify. Mop the floors if it's
possible - with some strong disinfectant.

Now you need to focus on the stuff you took out of the
garage. Sort them into groups. One for 'Stuff for the dump'
and another for 'Stuff to keep'.

In the 'Stuff to keep' sort according to function. Tools
together, bikes together, arts and crafts together, books
together and so on and so on.

Next, look at your empty garage. As you look at it - design
your space. Draw a diagram if you need to. Think about the
stuff that has to get back in there. Decide where you will
put them.

Also - think about this, if you want to get you
car back in there, let the walls and ceiling be your major
source for storage.

When you get to this point, if you think that you
need extra shelves or a better garage organization system,
then go get them. It will be easy for you to shop for these
now because you know how much stuff you have. And you know
what you need to hold it.

Now - the moment has arrived. Its time to put your 'Stuff
to keep' back into the garage. Do it group by group. Tools
go here, books go here - put everything back just as you
planned it.

...Done!

Now take some pictures and stick them on a notice board.
This way you and everyone living with you knows what the
garage should look like.

I'll talk to you on Thursday, have a great day and stay focused.

P.S. To help you out with your garage cleaning, here are
some resources you can use -

Do you have your copy of Greg Payette's ebook -
The Definitive Guide to Home Organization for Busy People?
If you do then you also have a copy of his other book -
Quick and Easy Home Storage and Organization Ideas.
In this book - he gives you storage ideas for your garage.

One other thing - I am a huge fan of using natural cleaning
products to clean around the house - including the garage.
My favorite ones are those created by Veriuni.
